What is Coaching all about?
Just as sports coaches help people to refine and improve their skills so they can achieve their potential, personal Coaching helps people to do exactly the same in all areas of their lives. Business, relationships, health, motivation and well being can call be improved through the medium of coaching.
The first thing I like to talk to my Coaching clients about is simple. Their wants.
- What do you want to achieve?
- What do you really want from life?
- What do you want to do differently?
From here it’s possible to create an image of what they need help with. Obviously, goals need to be achievable and realistic. Coaching wont make everyone a millionaire or an astronaut, but it can help you be the best you can be.
Everyone has a vision, a dream, a goal that seems so appealing but so far out of reach it seems impossible to attain. Coaching can help you break these long term dream goals down into more manageable and achievable chunks. By making consistent changes to your effort, productivity, focus and motivation you can achieve more than you ever thought possible. Some examples I use with clients is think how much tidying up you can get done in 10 minutes if you have a guest coming round. That’s Motivation. Or how productive you can be on a work project if distractions are eliminated. That’s Focus. These flippant examples are scenarios that happen at random times in everyday life. But you can apply the principles to all areas of your life, all the time. Imagine how much you could achieve if you were always motivated and focussed?
Goal setting is key. Immediate, short term, medium and long term goals are important. By consistently achieving short term goals, the medium term goals will take care of themselves and so on. By making your goals tangible, measurable and clear, you are instantly making them easier to achieve. Achieving the interim goals also boost confidence and motivation,. It cultivates a brilliant cycle of success. You know what you need to do on a daily basis and you can do it. You will see the improvements immediately, and that just spurs you on to do more.
Just wanting to do things differently isn’t usually enough to instil long term changes to the way you approach problems and stay focussed on achieving your goals. By implementing new strategies, new ways of thinking about obstacles and challenges, you can find better ways of dealing with them, turning them to your advantage.
Highly successful people meet challenges, obstacles and problems every day. It’s how they approach and deal with them that defines them as successful. As I said at the start, change is a constant. You must be aware of the changes as they happen and respond to them if you want to stay on top form.
Goals are also subject to change and our ambitions and circumstances change over time. Spending time re-evaluating is vital. Keep asking yourself “What do I want today?”
It’s easy to just sit back and let life trundle on. But, if you want to regain focus, motivation and change yourself for the better, then Coaching will help you.
